Reading Corps receives Community Impact Grant

Reading Corps, an AmeriCorps program of ServeMinnesota received a community impact grant from the United Way of Southwest Minnesota (UWSWMN) of $20,000.  These funds will help cover the cost of three additional Reading Corps tutors in local schools to help prepare elementary students to meet the critical milestone of reading proficiency by the end of third grade.  Over the past 20 years, Minnesota Reading Corps has served over 300,000 students by combining the science of how kids learn to read with AmeriCorps’s passionate people power to ensure students are achieving reading proficiency.   This work aligns with UWSWMN’s education priority area.

UWSWMN makes a difference in the lives of local people by investing in programs focused on the health, education, financial stability, hunger, and safety & well-being of people living in our service area.  Our service area includes the communities we serve in Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Yellow Medicine, and portions of Minnesota’s Cottonwood, Lac qui Parle, Nobles, and Redwood counties.

Community impact grants are the primary way UWSWMN invests donations into our communities.
The community impact grant process involves local volunteers who help review funding requests and collaborate to make funding recommendations to our board of directors.  For the 2023-24 funding cycle, a total of $212,000 has been awarded to programs working to improve the lives of local people.
