For more than 65 years, United Way of Southwest Minnesota has stepped up when the community needs us. Our mission to unite people and resources to improve lives and strengthen communities in southwest Minnesota is more important than ever. We know that various community resources, including many offered by our community partners, are seeing a much higher demand for their services because of the effects of COVID-19. We expect this demand to continue to rise as the days and weeks go on.
As events are cancelled, people are ordered to stay at home, businesses are closed, and restaurants are limited in their ability to serve the public, it seems that everyone’s life has been somehow effected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals and businesses throughout our service area are facing sudden economic challenges; workers are losing income; students are missing classroom instruction; and parents are balancing childcare, working from home and distancing learning.
People living in the United Way of Southwest Minnesota service are have always come together in times of crisis, rising to the challenges presented and supporting those in need.
In respond to this need, the UWSWMN staff and board has established the COVID-19 Response Fund to provide financial resources to local programs working on the front lines to provide critical direct services to those in need throughout our service area. As a reminder, UWSWMN cannot provide direct support to individuals but provides grant funding to local programs to do so. The board has set aside $21,500 to establish this fund.
Grants from this fund will be awarded as soon as possible with priority given to programs focusing on the following needs:
- Food distribution, including food support for seniors and those with disabilities (i.e. meal or grocery delivery)
- Emergency housing and shelter support
- Services that provide a safe environment for those experiencing domestic violence and/or are not safe in their current living situation
- Mental health services, especially suicide awareness, support, and prevention efforts
We ask for your support in helping people through the 35 communities in our service area. If you are able to make a financial contribution to this fund, please consider doing so in the near future. All donations will support local programs helping local people who are struggling due to the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
UWSWMN is a 501(c)(3) organization and all donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent by law. Please check with your tax adviser about the new provisions in the CARES Act to allow a tax deduction for donations up to $300, even if you take the standard deduction.
A gift to the UWSWMN COVID-19 Response Fund is a great way to join the fight for the health and financial stability of all people living in the UWSWMN service area. As social distancing becomes our new normal, a donation can transcend isolation and help support those most in need.
Today, you can answer the call for compassion. In a time of uncertainty, you can share the gift of hope. Donations can be sent to COVID-19 Response Fund, UWSWMN, PO Box 41, Marshall, MN 56258; or made securely online by clicking here.
